Dr. Diarmuíd O’Ríordaín
Mr. O’Ríordaín is Chief of Surgery at UPMC Beacon Hospital. In addition Mr. O’Ríordaín holds the positions of Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and Head of the Division of General & Colorectal Surgery at UPMC Beacon Hospital. Mr. O’Ríordaín also holds the posts of Consultant Surgeon at the Adelaide and Meath and Naas Hospitals in Dublin, and Lecturer in Surgery at Trinity College Dublin since 2001.
Clinical Expertise
Mr. O’Ríordaín’s major areas of surgical expertise are in Cancer of the Colon and Rectum and in Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery for colorectal cancer. Mr. O’Ríordaín has vast experience at leadership level in this area. He has initiated and lead the development of multidisciplinary colorectal cancer teams and laparoscopic colorectal surgery programmes at the University of Leeds, Adelaide and Meath Hospital and at the UPMC Beacon Hospital.
In addition to his Colorectal Cancer surgical interest, Mr. O’Ríordaín also performs Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Surgery for benign colorectal disease including inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease and rectal prolapse, and deals with a large number of patients with complex anal fistulae and perianal disease.
Given his extensive minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery experience and interest, Mr. O’Ríordaín also provides minimally invasive and day-care surgery for certain general non-colorectal surgical problems. Such problems include laparoscopic day-care surgery for groin hernias, abdominal wall and incisional hernias, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and gallstones.
Education, Training and Experience
Mr. O’Ríordaín is a 1986 graduate of University College Cork and having successfully completed a Senior Registrar training programme in Colorectal and General Surgery in Ireland, and attaining Specialist Fellowship of the RCSI, Mr. O’Ríordaín then moved to the United States for further senior clinical and research experience in Colorectal and Oncologic Surgery. He trained at some of the leading academic medical centres in the United States including The Mayo Clinic, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School and the world renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in Manhattan where Mr. O’Ríordaín was awarded the prestigious and competitively awarded International Surgical Oncology Fellowship.
In 1998 Mr. O’Ríordaín moved from the US to the UK, to take up the post of Consultant Surgeon and Senior Lecturer at St James’s Hospital in Leeds, a major teaching hospital of the largest NHS Trust in the UK, and at the University of Leeds Medical School. Here, Mr. O’Ríordaín played a lead role in the development and organization of the Colorectal Cancer Surgical service, Laparoscopic Surgery Programme and lead the development of the Multidisciplinary Colorectal Cancer team. In 2001 Mr. O’Ríordaín moved from the UK back to the post of Consultant Surgeon at the Adelaide and Meath Hospital, Dublin.
Mr. O’Ríordaín is a member of several International and National Professional Bodies including the Society of Surgical Oncology USA, International Society of Surgery, Society of Academic and Research Surgery, Irish Society of Coloproctology, Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland and the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland. Mr. O’Ríordaín has authored more than 50 peer reviewed scientific surgical articles and well over 100 lectures and presentations to learned societies in Ireland and Internationally.
